Cambridge IGCSE Physics is tiered and every candidate sits three papers: a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and one practical paper. Core candidates take Papers 1, 3 and 5 or 6; Extended candidates take Papers 2, 4 and 5 or 6.

Every candidate takes three papers and the practical route is either Paper 5 (Practical Test) or Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical).

Overall the assessment objectives are knowledge 50%, handling information and problem-solving 30%, and experimental skills 20%. Exams run June and November, with March available in India.

Questions parents ask about Cambridge IGCSE Physics

How is Cambridge IGCSE Physics assessed?+

Three papers. Core candidates take Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 3 (theory) and a practical paper; Extended candidates take Paper 2, Paper 4 and a practical paper. The practical is Paper 5 or Paper 6.

What's the difference between Core and Extended?+

Core covers the foundational content and is graded C to G; Extended adds supplement content and is graded A* to G. The tier is chosen at entry.

Is there a practical exam?+

Yes. Every candidate takes one practical paper worth 20%: either a hands-on Practical Test or a written Alternative to Practical. Both test the same experimental skills.

What grades are available?+

Up to C on the Core tier, and up to A* on the Extended tier.

Which topics are covered?+

Six broad areas: motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; and space physics.

When are the exams?+

In the June and November series, with an additional March series in India.
