English marks slip for a small number of fixable reasons

English feels the least mechanical of subjects and is in fact one of the most. Mark schemes reward specific, teachable moves, and students who are never shown them plateau however well they read.

reason icon 1

Retelling instead of analysing

The most common single cause. A student describes what happens in a text rather than how the writer creates an effect, and is marked in a lower band regardless of how well written the answer is.

No essay structure to fall back on

Strong ideas arriving in no particular order. Examiners reward a controlled argument, and structure is the most teachable thing in the subject.

reason icon 3

Quotation used as decoration

Quotes dropped in to prove the text was read, rather than short and embedded and then analysed word by word. This is a specific technique and it moves grades quickly.

reason icon 4

Writing to the wrong task

Creative, transactional and analytical writing are marked on different criteria. Students who write well but write the wrong thing lose marks nothing else can recover.

How Tuition Highway works

You don’t sort through profiles or chase a tutor. We run the match and stay accountable for it.

our tutors icon 1

We match, not you

We assess curriculum, subject, level, weak areas and schedule first — then match one tutor built around that.

our tutors icon 2

The same tutor, weekly

Continuity, not a rotating pool. Your child works with one tutor who knows exactly where they are.

our tutors icon 3

Progress reported to you

You get regular updates on what was covered and what’s next — no wondering what happens in the session.

Not right? We replace them

If the fit isn’t working, we rematch at no extra cost. The match is our responsibility, not your family’s.

Reassurance built into every step

If the first lesson doesn’t feel like the right fit, we match another expert tutor at no extra cost.

Questions parents ask

My child reads constantly but the English grade is average. How?+

Reading builds vocabulary and comprehension; it does not teach analysis or essay structure, which is what the mark scheme actually rewards. This gap is common, and closing it usually moves the grade faster than any other subject.

Do you support students for whom English is a second language?+

Yes. Many of our students across the GCC are working in English as an additional language, and the plan addresses both the subject and the language underneath it.

Which boards and curricula do you cover?+

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English Language and Literature, AQA GCSE, A-Level, IB MYP and Diploma, American high school and AP, and CBSE.

Do you help with coursework?+

We coach, question and give feedback — never write or edit submitted work. In English this line matters more than in any other subject, and we hold it firmly.

Can you help with the writing needed for university applications?+

We can coach the writing skills. We do not write or edit personal statements or application essays.
