Cambridge A-level Computer Science is assessed across four papers of 75 marks each. AS Level uses Papers 1 and 2; the full A-level adds Papers 3 and 4. Paper 4 is a genuine practical programming exam taken on a computer.

AS Level uses Papers 1 and 2 only. In Paper 4, candidates write and run programs on a computer and paste program listings and screenshots into an Evidence Document.

If there is no evidence of work in Paper 4, it receives no marks. Centres choose one high-level language from Python, Visual Basic or Java. Grades are A*-E at A-level and a-e at AS.

Questions parents ask about Cambridge A‑level Computer Science

Which papers does my child sit for Cambridge A-level Computer Science?+

Four: Paper 1 (Theory Fundamentals), Paper 2 (Fundamental Problem-solving and Programming), Paper 3 (Advanced Theory) and Paper 4 (Practical). AS Level uses Papers 1 and 2 only.

Is there a practical programming exam?+

Yes. Paper 4 is carried out on a computer. Students write and run programs, then paste listings and screenshots into an Evidence Document. No evidence means no marks.

Which programming language is used?+

The centre chooses one from Python, Visual Basic or Java (console mode). We tutor in whichever your child's school uses.

How is it graded?+

A* to E at A-level, and a to e at AS Level.

Is this the same as IT (9626)?+

No. Computer Science is about programming and how computers work; IT is about applying technology to produce solutions. They cannot be taken as a combined pair in one series.

When are the exams?+

In the June and November series, with an additional March series in India.

Can you help us choose between Cambridge and Edexcel Computer Science?+

Yes. Both are rigorous and code-heavy; Cambridge uses pseudocode with a choice of three languages and a single practical paper, while Edexcel's international A-level is Python-based with two three-hour practicals. The free assessment maps which suits your child.
