Edexcel International CS: four units, two of them real coding

This is a new modular qualification. Two IAS units and two IA2 units make the full International A-level, each worth 25%. The two theory units can be sat on paper or on-screen; the other two are three-hour practical programming exams in Python 3.

Units 2 and 4 are three-hour onscreen practical exams: candidates design, write, test and refine Python 3 in an IDE, using a provided Programming Language Subset.

First assessment is May/June 2027 (IAS) and May/June 2028 (IAL). Units run in January and June and can be resat. The A* requires an A overall plus at least 90% across Units 3 and 4 combined.

Questions parents ask about Edexcel International A‑level Computer Science

Is Edexcel International A-level Computer Science a new qualification?+

Yes - it is brand new, for first teaching from September 2026, with first assessment in May/June 2027 (IAS) and May/June 2028 (IAL).

Which units does my child take?+

Four: Unit 1 (Principles, theory) and Unit 2 (Practical Programming, Python) at IAS, plus Unit 3 (Advanced Principles, theory) and Unit 4 (Advanced Practical Programming, Python) at IA2.

How much of it is practical?+

Half - Units 2 and 4 are three-hour onscreen Python programming exams, where students design, write, test and refine real code in an IDE.

Which language is used?+

Python 3, written in an integrated development environment, guided by a provided Programming Language Subset. Theory units can be sat on paper or on-screen.

How is the A* awarded?+

You need an A across the whole International A-level and at least 90% of the marks across the two IA2 units, Units 3 and 4, combined.

Is it modular?+

Yes. Units run in January and June and can be resat, with the better of the two most recent attempts counting toward the grade.

What if the tutor isn't the right fit?+

We replace them - free, and with no argument - and hand over the unit-by-unit progress and known concerns so the new tutor continues seamlessly.

Can you help us choose between Edexcel and Cambridge Computer Science?+

Yes. Both are rigorous; Edexcel's new international A-level is Python-based with two three-hour practicals and theory that can be sat on-screen, while Cambridge uses pseudocode with a choice of three languages and one practical paper. The free assessment maps which suits your child.
